India's action - Post Uri-attack
Eighteen soldiers were killed by four heavily armed terrorist/militant on September 18, 2016 in Uri area of Baramulla district (Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir).
It is not the first time that some militant or terrorist group had attacked India. In early this year there was an attack on Pathankot Air Force Station, part of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force. From time to time India had faced many such terrorist attacks along with a constant insurgence by the militants/terrorist in state of Jammu and Kashmir (most Terrorist come from State of Pakistan). India had always tolerated it and tried to go by the procedure.
But this time it was different as India had it all, now the Indian government is trying to reciprocate the actions done by the Pakistan, in a diplomatic manner. In this view the Modi government has embarked on a series of retaliatory steps including - sustained diplomatic offensive, reviewing 56-year-old water treaty, boycotting regional intergovernmental organisation and geopolitical union (SAARC) and promoting BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), Scrapping the MFN status given to Pakistan .......
Since after the attack, most of the people are talking about "Going India war against Pakistan". This was not the wise decision, which Mr. Modi understands very well.
DIPLOMATIC OFFENSIVE:
There were many talks exchange between India and Pakistan at the 71st UNGA session, which was logically concluded by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, "We must acknowledge that terrorism is undoubtedly the biggest violation of human rights. It targets the innocent and kills indiscriminately ... But it is important to ask, who is behind this and who benefits from it? Terrorists do not own banks or weapons factories, so let us ask real question: who finances these terrorists, who arms them and provides sanctuaries?". During her speech she hinted towards Pakistan to promote terrorism on a global scale.
REVIEWING 56-YEARS-OLD WATER TREATY:
Indus Water Treaty (IWT) one of the most successful water treaties in the world is now at the verge to get into dispute as Modi government has taken steps towards its abrogation. This will a major step to take, and it will definitely hurt Pakistan badly. But results coming out of this will take longer time (as construction of Dam and any other facility will take long time to finish), and heat of the moment will not be there.
Even if India does not totally rejects the IWT, it can utilize the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) staying within the terms of the agreement. India can control, regulate and manipulate Pakistan which remains exclusively dependent on waters from these rivers. Even a 10% reduction in trans-boundary water flow would hurt Pakistan a lot, as its debt-ridden economy is reliant on earnings from agricultural exports, especially water-intensive rice and cotton (@HindustanTimes).
BOYCOTTING SAARC AND PROMOTING BIMSTEC:
The 19th SAARC summit which was scheduled to be held in Islamabad and after Uri attacks India has taken a decision not attend the summit at Islamabad citing 'Cross-border terrorist attacks in the region'. Following India Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan have also decided not to attend the SAARC summit, which is now reached at the point where it could be cancelled.
The aim of this boycott is to regionally isolate the Pakistan and then isolate from the global stage. This will also give India a new chance to open a fresh conglomerate of like-minded regional forces bypassing the banana republic.
MFN STATUS:
Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status is a status provided by one country (part of WTO) to another country (also a part of WTO) to increase inter-border trade with less difficulty.
India had provided the MFN status to Pakistan in 1996, but even after 20 years Pakistan has not yet been reciprocated back.
Either India can either take away the MFN status given to Pakistan, its impact will be minimal as trade relation between both the countries a not of greater amount. Or India can drag Pakistan in front of WTO and force him to give MFN status to India, if this happens the it would benefit Indian trader.
SURGICAL STRIKE:
India has conducted s surgical strike across LoC and make damage to the terrorist base present. This is the first time ever India has conducted a surgical strike outside its border from its side. Even in the Kargil War, India defended its territory and did not do any cross border attacks.
