It is now the end of the Rio Olympics - 2016. Overall this Olympics was bad news for India. India was able to score only 2 medal (1 Silver and 1 Bronze) despite being a home of more than 1.3 billion people and tens of millions of sports fan. In the 21st Century this was the worst performance by India in Olympics. Before the start of the event it is said that India will be able to able to get 12-14 medals but the results are not fruitful as the commitment.
In the history of Olympics India was only able to score 28 medal (9 Gold, 7 Silver and 12 Silver) - equal to the Gold tally of Michael Phelps, American Swimmer, itself. The overall performance of India in each Olympics is summarize in the table below:
India has performed poor in this Olympics and every other Olympic game in which it has participated. Indians who have performed well in the Olympics is mainly due to their and their families effort. It has nothing to do with the system, as a matter of fact they have faced many hurdles and had to compete in the face of enormous indifference and callousness from Indian officials. What all these athletes have in common is their determination to rise above the official neglect, that happens almost in every sports in India, and deliver their passion to new heights. This is what has been done in this and every other Olympic game.
These player complaints about the unavailability of resources & good facilities (indoor and outdoor) to hone their abilities to perform their best at the international arena. But no strong action has been done so far in this regards. Every time an Indian player win a medal in Olympics or any other international arena, they are given huge grants and job in their respective states. But will this do anything good for the future player? I am not saying that it is wrong (as they deserve it), but at least try to improve the sports facilities.
Once a player is selected in the Olympics then the hope of millions of Indians increases and they are excepted to perform well at the last moment, against the players who have got good facilities and infrastructure during their training time (Indians are not equipped with such facility at home, due to this many Indians try to go abroad for their training).
Indian, the best mind in the world are always at the back in sports or any other physical activities. We are good with computers but not with gymnastics. We have always been told that खेलोगे कूदोगे बनोगे ख़राब, पढोगे लिखोगे बनोगे नवाब, so sports come secondary to all. Those who dare to pursue their dreams in sports are often seen in askance. If we have to perform well in these international sport events, then we have to come above all of this nuisance. Indian government should promote sports culture. Country with billions of people should win a handful of medals. It is the responsibility of government to provide good facilities and infrastructure to the athletes to create a pool of talent, then we can show the world what we are really capable of.
